Japan... near... and far. The word 'Japan' is not new to us, probably because of the recent active cultural exchanges. We arrived in Japan, a flight less than three hours from Seoul. Was it this close to Korea? Why has it remained far from us? There is still a big emotional gap between the two countries, remembering the painful past and Japan's distorted textbook. Did Jonah feel the same way when he ran away to Tarshish (Jonah 1:3) after refusing God's order to go to Nineveh (Jonah 3:3)? Would Dr. Cho feel this way?

People's Mountain, People's Sea
The '2000 Jesus Festival' in Japan where the name of Jesus Christ still sounds unfamiliar made a rare picture. The Nagoya International Convention Center had a seating capacity of 3,000 people. The first part of the praise festival was prepared by the Japanese churches, and during the second part the local pastors would preach. We could see empty seats in the three-decker Convention Center. The staff began to worry thinking, "Is Japan going to hurt us in this way?" Finally, it was time for Dr. Cho to preach. Hearing someone sigh with relief, we looked for empty seats. We could not find one. The place was packed by the time Dr. Cho started to preach. They filled the 3000 seats. They looked at him like children waiting for a big gift on Christmas Day. People waited with keen interest, and the atmosphere prevailed over the distractions by those who could not find a seat.

Our Pastor, As Always

"Is your life getting difficult to live? Even so, do not be disappointed. Try to live according to God's Word. The almighty God changes the bad into good, despair to hope, death to life. "Dr. Cho's explosive sermon was strong. There was no Jonah running away to Tarshish in his mind. The Gospel was preached with love for the Japanese people who were dying in a country of idols as well as his confession of love to Christ, leading the painful past behind filled with love for Christ. People who filled the center listened carefully to Dr. Cho's sermon. They were desperately trying not to miss a word. They could not help shedding tears. Some were praying earnestly for healing, laying hands on the aching part of their body as instructed by Dr. Cho. In that picture, I saw the people of Nineveh who were repenting after listening to Jonah's sermon.
