Pastor Cho's Sermon Outline - Yoido Full Gospel Church - Seoul, Korea
Truth and Falsehood
Jonah 2:7 ~ 2:10

2002-07-14

For three days, Jonah suffered in the stomach of a giant fish. Logically speaking, there was no way that he could survive. Should he accept reality and give up on life? Or should he wage spiritual warfare, trust in God's promise and stay alive? In this dreadful situation, he said that those who place their trust in false and worthless things would not enjoy God's grace. But those who look to God and give thanks will receive the grace of God. Jonah looked to God, repented of his sins, and God saved his life.

Let us distinguish between that which is true and that which is false and worthless. Things that are true are established facts that will never change. The grace of redemption upon the Cross is an unshakable truth (Revelation 1:5,6). Faith in Christ will save us (Titus 3:6,7). Healing is a true provision (Matthew 8:17). Freedom from the curse is a reality (Galatians 3:13,14). The truth of the resurrection and eternal life will never change (Revelation 21:3,4). What are false and worthless things? They are lies, things without value. Satan tries to rule over us; the truth is that Jesus has set us free from the law of sin and death (Romans 8:1,2; John 8:44). Satan tells us we must remain sick; the truth is that Jesus has provided healing (Mark 16:17,18). Satan tells us we must live under the curse; the truth is that Jesus became poor, so that through his poverty we might become rich (2 Corinthians 8:9). Satan tells us there is no life after death; the truth is that Christ has destroyed the power of death and hell (Hebrews 2:14).

Look to the truth! Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so Jesus must be lifted up so everyone can believe in Him and have eternal life (John 3:14-16). Jesus has freed us from the poison of sin and the curse, from the sentence Adam and Eve brought upon mankind. As we look upon Christ's redemption on the Cross, we can find new life in Christ! Through His power, we can be transformed into His likeness with ever-increasing glory (2 Corinthians 3:18; Philippians 3:21; Hebrews 12:2).

Christians are engaged in spiritual warfare. Satan stresses reality, the senses, and the experiences of the physical world. But we must meditate on the truth in the spiritual realm (1 John 2:16,17), and trust in the grace and salvation provided upon the Cross (John 14:6). We must have a spiritually healthy diet (Romans 10:17; John 6:35). Satan tries to bring anxiety, but Christ has given us the power to overcome the enemy (Luke 10:19; John 8:32). We must firmly believe the truth and confess it, for the tongue has the power of life and death and reflects what is in us (Proverbs 18:20,21). A lack of faith brings destruction, but God rescues those who give Him thanks (Hebrews 13:15).

Heavenly Father, like Jonah we all experience suffering. Help us to confess our faith in Jesus Christ so that You can rescue us and we can glorify You.

Dear friend, do not imitate what is evil but what is good. Anyone who does what is good is from God. Anyone who does what is evil has not seen God.
