Pastor Cho's Sermon Outline - Yoido Full Gospel Church - Seoul, Korea
Press on Toward the Goal
Philippians 3:13 ~ 3:14

2002-06-23

One day a sister in Christ who experienced bouts of depression came to church to pray. She heard a strange noise behind her. She looked back and saw a vision of trash and empty cans attached to a long rope; the rope was tied around her neck. Christ asked her why she carried all that filthy trash from her past. She repented of her sins, felt the strong wind of the Holy Spirit blow away all the trash, and great joy filled her heart.

Don't look back! Don't carry all the baggage of fear, depression, and past sins; repent and forget them like God does (Hebrews 10:17). After Peter denied Christ three times, he felt unworthy to be a disciple. Three times Peter said "yes," when Jesus asked Peter if he loved Him and then Jesus said, "Feed my sheep." He wanted Peter to look forward, not back. Then Peter preached boldly and brought 3,000 people to Christ! We must forgive those we hated in the past. Hatred negatively affects our relationships with God and others. When we fail to forgive others, God does not forgive our sins (Matthew 6:13-15). We must let go of our past failures and fears. Memorize Psalm 91:2-6 to help you drive away fear. Our Korean soccer team always lost World Cup matches in Europe. But Korea's coach Guus Hiddink encouraged the team to look forward, not back. Get rid of an inferiority complex and despair. Christians are a chosen people (1 Peter 2:9,10), not an inferior people. Give over to Christ what you cannot handle (Matthew 11:28).

Look ahead! The Lord told Abraham to look into the future. He would make Abraham into a great nation and bless him, and all peoples on earth would be blessed through him (Genesis 12:1-3). We must leave our sinful past behind and look toward the future provided by the redemption on the Cross. God offers us hope, happiness, blessing, life, healing, and heaven (2 Peter 1:4; 1 Peter 2:24; John 14:1-3; 3 John 1:2).

Look toward God's reward! A lazy person, however, can't succeed. Look at the Korean soccer team. They had to work hard to be able to run back and forth across the field. To grow in faith, we must always eat well (1 Peter 2:1,2) and nourish ourselves by calling on God (Jeremiah 33:3). Korean soccer player Jung-hwan Ahn and his wife are good Christians who call on God. He told his wife he felt God put the ball near his head to help him score a golden goal. We need to be patient and have faith (1 Corinthians 13:7). The Holy Spirit will always be with us to help us (Matthew 28:20). We must choose to become strong and courageous (Joshua 1:6-9). If we obey God's Word, we will be strong. Let us keep our eyes on Jesus (Hebrews 12:1,2).

Heavenly Father, help us to forget what is behind and abandon hatred, fear, failure, and inferiority complexes. Help us look to the future and run the race of life with great patience and faith-like the Korean soccer team.

Dear friend, do not imitate what is evil but what is good. Anyone who does what is good is from God. Anyone who does what is evil has not seen God.
