Prayer and Despair
Luke 18:1 ~ 18:8

2002-04-21

Anyone who has prayed and sought an answer from God knows how difficult it is. When Jesus prayed with such effort in Gethsemane, His sweat was like drops of blood. When we pray, we are waging spiritual warfare. We may face despair when we don't receive an answer right away, but Jesus told us to pray without ceasing.

Jesus knows prayer is difficult, so He told His disciples a parable to teach them that they should always pray and not give up (Luke 18:1-3). There was a judge in a certain town who didn't fear God and didn't care about people. A widow in that town kept coming to him saying, "Grant me justice against my adversary." The merciless judge ignored her. The widow had no one to protect her and had no influence or power. Sometimes when we pray, we may feel like the widow. We may think that God is like the uncaring, cold-hearted judge and is not listening to us.

The widow collided with a wall of indifference. How did she react when she faced such lack of concern? She persistently went to the judge, determined to get justice. She would not allow herself to be discouraged. The determined person calls out to God from the depths of his heart until he receives an answer from Him. Day after day, the widow told the judge, "Grant me justice against my adversary." Finally, he decided to see that she got justice - for his sake, not hers - so she wouldn't eventually wear him out with her coming (Luke 18:4,5). The kind of spiritual warfare that we face is not over in one or two days. We must pray and not give up.

Listen to what the unjust judge says. Why did he finally grant justice to the widow? Because of her persistent determination in calling out to him, she received an answer to her plea. God will bring about justice for His chosen ones (Luke 18:6-8). We should ask, seek, and knock when we need something (Luke 11:9,10). Then we must believe the answer will come (Hebrews 10:38; James 1:6-8). Our heavenly Father wants to give us good gifts (Matthew 7:9-11). Don't let despair break you down. Pray, and don't give up (Luke 21:19; James 5:11). A deaconess recently shared this testimony. Her husband retired in 1994, and they invested all of their money in a new apartment that was to be built within a year. Then the builder went bankrupt. She persistently prayed, asking Jesus to be her lawyer and get their money back. She recently received a telephone call from the builder of that construction company; he was returning all the money they had paid down on their new apartment She had prayed almost nine years without giving up (Matthew 21:22; John 14:13,14). Pray without ceasing and without despair.

Heavenly Father, help us to pray persistently with determination and not give up.

Dear friend, do not imitate what is evil but what is good. Anyone who does what is good is from God. Anyone who does what is evil has not seen God.
