Pastor Cho's Sermon Outline - Yoido Full Gospel Church - Seoul, Korea
One's Cross
Galatians 2:20

2002-02-17

Jesus Christ did not want to die on the cross. He wanted to avoid such great suffering. He was agonizing in prayer when He asked God to take the cup from Him if possible, but finally prayed, "Not my will, but your will." He knew He had to bear the cross; this was God's plan. Without Christ's death and resurrection there would be no glorious provisions for us.

Each of us has a cross to bear - a death penalty. But inwardly we can be renewed day by day (2 Corinthians 4:16-18). "Those who belong to Christ have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires" (Galatians 5:24). This is not just a theory; this is truth. Our old nature must die. We need to bear our cross (Luke 9:23). Crosses are different sizes -whatever size God knows we need. We die on the cross with Jesus and are resurrected to a new life, a new character with the love and joy of Jesus, so others will see the changes in us (2 Corinthians 4:10-11, 14).

What is not a cross? A cross is not temptation to sin. Drinking, smoking, gambling, and other acts of sinful nature are a result of the curse because of Adam and Eve's sin (Galatians 5:19-21). Our failure to avoid these temptations is not a cross. Punishment for crimes committed is not a cross. Sickness is not a cross; it was brought upon mankind because of sin and the curse. Jesus has provided healing (Acts 10:38). Poverty is not a cross to bear; Christ has provided blessings (Galatians 3:13-14).

What is a cross? A cross is the suffering we experience because we believe in Jesus Christ (2 Thessalonians 1:5). When we suffer at home or anywhere because of our faith in Jesus, this is a cross we must bear (Philippians 1:29). Many of the missionaries our church has sent out suffer because of impoverished living conditions and persecution. This is a cross they must bear to spread the gospel (2 Timothy 1:8).

The cross that the apostle Paul carried was a thorn in his side. Satan followed him everywhere to stir up opposition and make him suffer. When Paul asked God to remove his thorn the Lord replied, "My grace is sufficient for you for my power is made perfect in weakness" (2 Corinthians 12:7-9). God allowed the messenger of Satan to torment Paul so he could receive greater grace and power through Jesus Christ (2 Corinthians 12:10; 2 Timothy 2:10-12).

Heavenly Father, all of us have a small or a large cross to bear; carrying a cross is painful. Help our egos (self-praise) to die. Help us to accept our cross with gladness so we can receive Your grace and power and Your glory can shine through us.

Dear friend, do not imitate what is evil but what is good. Anyone who does what is good is from God. Anyone who does what is evil has not seen God.
