Fear
1 John 4:18

2002-01-27

Every day we face fears big and small: fear of failure, abandonment, illness, and despair. No matter what kind of fear, if it lies in us too long, it will be destructive; fear is a deteriorating force against our faith. 1 John 4:18 tells us that perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment.

Fear due to sin began when Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit. God did not create them with fear. But when they heard God walking in the garden, they were afraid because they were naked; they hid from Him (Genesis 3:8-10, 21). A fig leaf was not enough to hide behind. Blood was shed when God killed an animal so they could be clothed with its skin. Our attempts will not overcome fear. Only Jesus can remove sin and fear through His shed blood on the Cross (Romans 8:33-34).

Satan tries to put fear in us. God did not give us a spirit of fear, but a spirit of power, of love, and of self-discipline (2 Timothy 1:7). Satan uses fear to attack us, and then he robs, steals, and destroys us. He first put fear in Job's heart and when Job's heart was frozen with fear, Satan attacked him with calamities (Job 3:24-26). We must know who we are in Christ. We have received the Spirit of sonship (Romans 8:15). Let us always believe in God and praise Him, no matter what the situation may be (James 4:7; Philippians 4:6-7).

There is fear in many circumstances. The Israelites were in the desert when God sent their 12 spies into Canaan. Ten returned with a negative report, afraid of the Canaanites, in spite of God's many miraculous signs. They forgot the greatness of God when they crossed the desert (Numbers 14:9-11). They died in the desert from a plague. Fear is the opposite of faith. Peter saw Jesus do many miracles. Peter walked on the water to meet Jesus, but when Peter saw the wind, he was afraid and began to sink (Matthew 14:30-31). If we have faith, fear will go away. When we trust in God, we do not need to fear (Psalm 46:1-3).

There is fear when we rely on human beings. The disciples were crossing the Sea of Galilee when a storm arose. They were afraid they would drown, so they woke up Jesus. He asked why they were afraid, simply rebuked the wind and waves, and it was completely calm (Mark 4:37-38; Matthew 8:25-27). David did not fear Goliath because he trusted in God; faith drove out fear (1 Samuel 17:45). David fought and won! Faith in God replaces fear; love drives out fear (1 John 4:18; John 14:1).

Heavenly Father, we shiver in fear when we fail to love and trust You. Fear robs;faith brings You into our hearts. Help us to look only to You and overcome fear.

Dear friend, do not imitate what is evil but what is good. Anyone who does what is good is from God. Anyone who does what is evil has not seen God.
