Introduction : In Psalm 121, the psalmist was looking for the one who would help him in trouble saying, "I lift up my eyes to the hills." A mountain symbolizes "reliability". When people make oaths, they liken themselves to a mountain that will never change. However, the psalmist didn´t mean a natural mountain, but he implied power, money, and fame as strong as a high mountain. I think I can get help from those things. Very soon, I realize that power, money, and fame will not give us permanent help. They are with us today, but disappear tomorrow. Then where do we get our help? The psalmist says, "My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth." It is the right confession of faith. Why does our help come from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth?
1. God helps us with love. 1) The image of God is love. Since God is Spirit, He is not seen by our physical senses. 2) Love is the image of God (1 Jn 4:12). (1) We can see God in the life of love of Sister Teresa in India. (2) We can see God in the life of Dr. Albert Schweitzer when he was in Africa. (3) We can feel God in the love of our mother. 3) Jesus is the incarnation of God´s love. The love of God is revealed in Jesus most concretely (Isa 53:5). (1) God´s love of forgiveness was seen through the blood of Jesus on the Cross. (2) God´s love washed away iniquities, and gave holiness and the Holy Spirit. (3) God´s love of healing was seen when Jesus was flogged and wounded terribly. (4) God´s love of giving the blessing of Abraham was seen when Jesus was hanging on the Cross. (5) We can see and feel God´s love that saves us from death and gives us eternal life in heaven in the image of Jesus who died on the Cross. He who has seen Jesus has seen God. The love of God is completely revealed in Jesus (Jn 1:18). 4) By accepting the love of God revealed in Jesus, we can believe in God and trust in His help (1 Jn 4:10-12; 1 Jn 4:18; Ro 8:35-37).
2. God helps us with grace. Grace is a gift given freely. 1) Heaven, earth, and everything in them are the gifts of grace - we have to enjoy them with thankful and impressed hearts every day (Ps 8:3-6). 2) Salvation is the gift of grace - God has given us freely the gift of the Fivefold Gospel and the Threefold Blessing through the sacrifice of Jesus on the Cross (Ro 3:23,24; Eph 1:7). 3) God bears our burdens and works for us every day, God of grace (Ps 68:19; Mt 11:28; Jer 33:2,3). 4) In the time of my favor I heard you, and in the day of salvation I helped you (2 Co 6:2; Ps 23:1; Eph 3:20).
3. God helps us with omnipotence. 1) How will this be? (Lk 1:31-35). (1) God is a Creator (Ge 1:1). He made heaven and earth in six days (Ps 89:11). (2) God sustains all things (Heb 1:3). 2) God´s power was revealed in history (Ex 14:13,14; Jn 11:39, 40). 3) Do not fear (Isa 41:10-13; Ps 115:9; Heb 10:38; Da 3:17,18).
4. God helps us with blessing. 1) God made the paradise of Eden for Adam (Ge 2:8,9,15). 2) God has prepared the paradise of heaven for those who are saved (Jn 14:1,2; 1 Co 2:10). 3) Present sufferings are for blessing in the future (Dt 8:11-16; Ps 81:10; Ro 8:17,18; 1 Pe 1:7; 4:12,13).
Conclusion : When we accept God´s help, we can live with dreams, hope, positivism, thanks, and praise.
