Pastor Cho's Sermon Outline - Yoido Full Gospel Church - Seoul, Korea
Have Faith, Endure, and Wait
James 5:10 ~ 5:11

2003-05-25

The world we live in is mired in suspicion, distrust, falsehood, and deception. The words patience and endurance are not welcome. Everyone and everything is in a hurry. Modern civilization insists on speed: faster cars, faster subways and planes, and faster phones and Internet. People expect one-dose wonder drugs to heal them of all illnesses. Students search for quicker learning methods, prefer fast foods, and marriage and divorce has become a revolving door. No one wants to endure hardship and wait to bear fruit. However, God requires us to have faith, to endure, and to wait. Unless these three elements are supplied, successful faith is not guaranteed.

In what must we have faith? We must have faith in God who works to help us. He is the creator of the universe. He started creation and finished it (Genesis 2:1,2; Jeremiah 33:2). We must have faith in God who carries our burdens (Matthew 11:28; Psalm 68:19). Christ has carried all our sin (Isaiah 53:6), our worldliness from the fall (Galatians 5:24,25), and carried our diseases (1 Peter 2:24). He redeemed us from poverty and the curse (Galatians 3:13,14), carried the burden of death and ruin, and still carries them today (John 11:25,26; Romans 6:23). We must have faith in Christ who will return for us (1 Corinthians 15:12-20; 1 Thessalonians 4:16,17).

What must we endure? We must endure doubt, fear, disappointment, and anger. The greatest fault of the Israelites as they passed through the desert was their lack of patience. At Kadesh-Barnea, they couldn't wait for Moses to return from Mt. Sinai, and they made an idol, a golden calf, and worshipped it. God was angry and made them wander in the desert for 40 years (Hebrews 3:15-19). When evildoers assault us and we encounter adverse circumstances, we must let God confront them and they will wither (Psalm 37:1-3). We must wait patiently for the Lord (Psalm 37:7-10). Two of Abraham's greatest failures occurred because he could not endure (Hebrews 6:14,15).

For what must we wait? God's divine clock is different from our human clock (2 Peter 3:9). He is not hasty; it requires time to obtain God's promise. Abraham waited 25 years after God promised him a son. Joseph waited 13 years before he became prime minister of Egypt. Moses went to the desert for 40 years before returning to Egypt. God is the authority; we are mere followers (Hebrews 3:12-14; Proverbs 16:3). A sister prayed nine years for her unsaved family. She was encouraged to keep praying when she heard a pastor say he had prayed 23 years until God answered his prayer. The sister kept praying and in the 10th year, her whole family accepted Christ as Savior! Let us believe in the infinite wisdom and providence of God-and wait.

Heavenly Father, help us to have faith, endure, and wait, and experience Your hand at work.

Dear friend, do not imitate what is evil but what is good. Anyone who does what is good is from God. Anyone who does what is evil has not seen God.

    3 John  1:11
