Pastor Cho's Sermon Outline - Yoido Full Gospel Church - Seoul, Korea
A Heritage from the Lord
Psalms 127:3 ~ 127:5

2003-05-04

In the Korean language, the term for "heritage" also means "enterprise." Because of this dual meaning, when Koreans hear the term "heritage" they think of large and small companies that do business. When we marry and have children, they are a heritage/enterprise given to us by God. When we succeed in this enterprise, our children will become a reward from God. Even so, many parents neglect the greatest enterprise of raising children, and when the parents are old and frail, their children become their misfortune. As we face Children's Day, we must think about how to manage our God-given enterprise of raising children.

Raising children requires a farmer's loving care. Jesus said, "I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener" (John 15:1). If a farmer wants to have a harvest, he must care for his garden by providing water and fertilizer, weeding it, and preventing harmful insects from damaging it. We must care for our children with great devotion, love, and hard work to have good results. It is a dangerous mistake for parents to think that children can grow up without much trouble regardless of the love and care they give. Children need the utmost devotion, care, and love (James 5:7).

Children's education starts at home. An atmosphere full of love, harmony, and peace, is needed to provide nourishment for their growth (Matthew 5:39-42). Character formation takes place between ages one to six, and the role models during that growth are their parents (Proverbs 22:6). Many of the youth who cause social problems today come from dysfunctional or unhappy families. We must teach children the right and wrong way by abundantly praising the good and punishing the bad without hesitation (Proverbs 23:13-16; 29:15).

Raising children bears fruit through faith education. We must plant faith in children when they are young (Proverbs 22:6; 2 Timothy 3:15; 1:5; Exodus 2:5-10). Parents should have family worship in the home, teach the children to keep the Sabbath, and teach them by example to give tithes and offerings so they will give when they grow up as well. The greatest legacy we can give our children is to teach them how to obey God (Deuteronomy 6:5-7; 28:1-6).

Our children are a heritage from the Lord. They will lead our country tomorrow and must be loved, protected, and raised with care (Matthew 19:14; 18:5-6). Let us not neglect our children, the future of the nation, the Church, and heaven. Let us reflect on whether we are raising our children as the heritage/enterprise that God has given us.

Heavenly Father, we know that you sent the Holy Spirit to help us raise our children well. May we determine to do our best with Your help.

Dear friend, do not imitate what is evil but what is good. Anyone who does what is good is from God. Anyone who does what is evil has not seen God.
