Why Does God Allow Evil?
1 John 5:18 ~ 5:21

2003-03-09

Whenever shocking tragedies happen, a question comes to mind. If God exists, why does He allow such evil? When the Twin Towers in New York collapsed from terrorists ramming two hijacked airplanes where over 3,000 people are estimated to have died, and when hundreds of people were tragically killed in the Daegu subway arson fire, it is natural to ask this very painful question. Some say that God doesn't exist. Some say He exists but doesn't care about people. Others say such events are even beyond God's power. How can Christians respond?

God does not tempt anyone with evil nor is He tempted by evil. The evil in this world resulted because Satan tricked Adam and Eve. Satan, Adam and Eve, and their descendents cause evil-not God (Romans 5:12). Heaven belongs to God but God gave the earth to humankind, to Adam and Eve (Psalm 115:16). Adam and Eve were living a "leased" life. When they sinned, they gave this lease and the authority over this world to Satan (2 Corinthians 4:4; 1 Corinthians 15:24). When Jesus returns to earth, Satan will be driven out and lose his lease and authority on this earth (Revelation 20:10).

God's liberation of humanity and His plan for salvation. Why does God just sit idle and not do anything about the evil in this world? He has done something! Think about the principle of ?roperty?redemption where the nearest relative comes and redeems what his countryman has sold (Leviticus 25:23-25). Jesus Christ came as a "relative" of humanity. He restored our lease (Revelation 5:1-7) through His sacrifice and redemption on the Cross. Christ paid for our lease; He rescued us (Colossians 1:13; 2:15; Galatians 1:4), and we are restored as the children of God.

Spiritual warfare. Each person reborn is a "mini" heaven; the kingdom of heaven is in us (Luke 17:21). As long as Satan still has the authority over this world, Christians are the only ones who can oppose the work of Satan (Ephesians 6:12). Why do we gather to pray? We pray so that God's will shall be done on earth as it is in heaven. We pray to divert and demolish evil and to prevent world disaster and destruction from nuclear weapons. King Herod was about to execute Peter, but through prayer, Peter was miraculously rescued by an angel (Acts 12:1-16). Disaster is not the will of God; it is the will of Satan. God's will includes salvation, healing, and blessing (Isaiah 53:5; Acts 10:38). Let us pray that Christ will prevent us from temptation that leads to sin (1 Peter 5:7-9; James 4:7) and deliver us from evil (2 Thessalonians 3:3). Let us pray and then manifest God's work (1 John 4:4). Only Christians and the Church can pray and cut off evil from harming us. When we pray, God will protect us from evil (1 John 5:18).

Heavenly Father, help us in the name of Jesus Christ to overcome evil.

Dear friend, do not imitate what is evil but what is good. Anyone who does what is good is from God. Anyone who does what is evil has not seen God.

    3 John  1:11
