Crucify Your Sinful Desires
Galatians 5:24

2003-03-02

An individual or a nation that falls prey to its sinful desires is doomed. Long ago, a man who had mined a large amount of gold boarded a ship for Seoul to sell the gold. The ship was hit by a storm at sea. The man clung to the gold tied around his waist and ultimately died. The Bible says that greed begets sin, and sin leads to death. Sinful desires confuse a person's wisdom and intellect, ultimately resulting in sin and death. Sinful desires hinder clear thinking.

Adam's fall resulted from his sinful desires. In the Garden of Eden, Satan seduced Adam and Eve by planting greed and covetousness in them, telling them they would become like God if they ate of the forbidden fruit (Genesis 2:17; 3:4-6). Sinful desires offend God, causing people to betray Him and walk down the wrong path. God sent King Saul to destroy the wicked Amalekites. Because of his greed, he did not destroy everything, and he failed the Lord. He rejected God's Word, and God rejected him (1 Samuel 15:17-19,22,23). David's covetousness led him to adultery and murder. When sinful desires are conceived, they give birth to sin (2 Samuel 11:2-5; 12:8-12).

Christ repudiates sinful desires. Satan appealed to Jesus' physical desires and needs and told Him to fill his stomach with bread. However, Jesus answered Satan with the precious Word of God, "Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God" (Matthew 4:4). Because Jesus did not have any sinful desires, He could not be tempted through the lust of the eyes (Matthew 4:5-7) or the pride of life (Matthew 4:8-11). Satan may give temporary blessings, but he cannot give true happiness and eternal life. If we drive out worldly desires, then there will be no place for temptation in our minds and hearts (Philippians 2:5-7; Matthew 5:3).

How to overcome our sinful desires. We all have a certain amount of sinful desires because we are descendents of Adam. We must fear the Lord and consistently avoid evil (Proverbs 3:7; 14:2; Jeremiah 2:19). We must know His commandments and His Word (Psalm 119:101-102,133), refuse to accept any sinful desires, and do His will (Colossians 3:5,6). We must not look on forbidden fruit and dream about it as Adam did. Dreaming while looking at the temptation leads to sin (James 1:14-16; Romans 12:2). Let us pray always that God will deliver us from evil (Matthew 26:40,41), and let us seek the help of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:16,17). Temptation may seem like ripened fruit, good for food and pleasing to the eye. However, we must not become a victim of Satan's temptation. "Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires" (Galatians 5:24).

Heavenly Father, sinful desires result in sin and suffering. Help us to obey Your Word and experience the joy of overcoming temptation.

Dear friend, do not imitate what is evil but what is good. Anyone who does what is good is from God. Anyone who does what is evil has not seen God.

    3 John  1:11
