The River of Living Water
Ezekiel 47:1 ~ 47:12

2001-07-18

Ezekiel had a dream about the new millennium, about water turning into a river as it flowed from the temple. Wherever it flowed it gave life - to trees, to living creatures, and to fish. This great River of Life was a prophecy of not only what will happen in the new millennium but of what should happen in the life of a Christian on a daily basis. Jesus said in John 7:37-38, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him."

Where does the spiritual living water flow? It flows within us because God resides within us (John 14:23). He is with us at work, at home, in the fields - wherever we go the throne of God is in us, and when we praise Him, He is greatly glorified (Psalm 22:3). From the throne of God flows a great river of living water because it brings life to whatever it touches (Revelation 22:1-2). For all people who have accepted Jesus Christ as their Savior, it flows from Him to us to others (1 Corinthians 6:19) because we are the temples of God. Christians are not just regular people; the River of Life is within us and should flow to all people.

What is this River of Life that flows from within us? It is a river of righteousness that makes us righteous when we believe in Christ (Romans 3:23-24). It is a river of cleanliness and holiness where a great washing takes place within us and makes us holy through Christ (1 Corinthians 6:11). It is a river of joy (Psalm 16:11), not happiness from external circumstances, but a delight and ecstasy that comes from God from within. The River of Life is a river of healing which stamps out sickness (Exodus 23:25) through Christ's provision on the Cross. The River of Life is a river of well being (Psalm 128:2); it is a river of heaven (John 6:54).

Is anyone thirsty? The Lord invites those who are thirsty to come and drink (Isaiah 44:3; Psalm 42:1; Revelation 21:6). The River of Life is found only within Jesus Christ through repentance (John 3:36; 14:6). Through the Word of God we drink and understand the secrets of God (Psalm 119:116) and learn more about who we are in Christ. God desires our praise and wants to satisfy our thirsty longing for Him (Psalm 107:8-9). Above all else, let us guard our heart, for it is the wellspring of life (Proverbs 4:23).

Heavenly Father, help us become thirsty for You, and may the River of Living Water flow from each one of us - bringing life wherever it flows.

Dear friend, do not imitate what is evil but what is good. Anyone who does what is good is from God. Anyone who does what is evil has not seen God.
