Self-Portraits Leading to Success or Failure in Life
2 Corinthians 5:17

2001-07-03

A young office woman was kind, quiet, and average looking but didn't have much interaction with other employees. When she took a month's vacation, she returned to the office completely changed; she was outgoing and self-confident. What made the difference? She revealed that she had plastic surgery on her nose during her vacation. Before surgery she thought her nose was ugly, and she had drawn a terrible self-portrait of inferiority. After surgery her self-portrait had changed to one of beauty and self-confidence. How do we think of ourselves?

Mankind has a twisted self-portrait because of sin and being a slave to Satan. Therefore, he gambles, drinks, has a guilty conscience, fears failure, feels unloved, and feels weak and unhealthy. A man without a job told Norman Vincent Peale he had nothing in life. Dr. Peale asked him several questions, "Do you have a wife, children, and friends? Are you healthy?" When the man answered "Yes" to all these questions, Dr. Peale told him he had many things and was blessed and said, "Look at what you have-not at what you don't have." So the man realized he was wealthy, cleaned up his appearance and went out and found a job. People with a good self-portrait will convey this to others.

How can we change our self-portrait? There is only one way and that is to ask Jesus Christ to forgive us of our sins and become a new creation in Him (2 Corinthians 5:17). The power of God gives us a new self-portrait of who we really are in Him (2 Corinthians 3:18). Christ also provides healing (Matthew 8:17), righteousness (1 Peter 2:24), and the inheritance of heaven (Ephesians 2:4-6). We are rich (2 Corinthians 8:9) in the Lord!

Once we paint a new self-portrait, we must keep it. We do this by reading God's Word and doing what it tells us to do; then we will be blessed in what we do (James 1:22-25). Psalm 103:1-5 lists many of our blessings. Don't let Satan tempt you with your old self-portrait. You are blessed! You are valuable, precious and unique. Don't let anything or anyone come against your new self-portrait in Christ. We are really children of God so we should act like it and through the power of God, soar with Christ like an eagle. Confess it - I have a new self-portrait through Christ! If you paint a self-portrait of despair and failure, you will be a failure in life. However, if you paint a self-portrait of confidence and victory, you allow the Holy Spirit to help you become successful in life. Christ has provided a blessed life for us. What kind of self-portrait will you choose?

Heavenly Father, thank You for Jesus Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit. When our sins are forgiven, we can have new self-portraits and live successful lives of blessing and victory.

Dear friend, do not imitate what is evil but what is good. Anyone who does what is good is from God. Anyone who does what is evil has not seen God.
